Busy With Cars

October 25, 2009

I thought I better post something up as i haven’t had much spare time recently, but don’t really have time to write anything constructive. I’ve been pretty busy the last week, both at work and in the evenings, the MVC project I’m working on is going pretty well, we are writing lots of unit tests at the moment, which is good but I’m still trying to learn how to do it well.

On of the things I’m busy with at home is Forza 3, which i picked up on Friday. It really is a great driving game from what i have played so far, hopefully i can make some more time to play it this week. It made me think about this Kotaku article about a Toyota exec who thinks driving games have made people less enthusiastic about buying cars. Whilst i don’t think this is true for cars being a mode of transport for getting from A to B, i do think it makes a difference to people buying cars for fun, especially in these days of expensive fuel, lower speed limits and speed cameras. 10 years ago people were happily buying turbo charged Subaru Impreza’s whereas today most people are driving more sober turbo diesels.

I used to do some drifting myself, which i really enjoyed but it was an expensive hobby and ultimately as i grew up i just couldn’t justify having a car to play with at weekends. Maybe one day i will go back to it but for now practicality is king.

In fact this weekend i went to look at the new BMW X1, which seemed like a much more practical car, i quite liked it in fact but i was a bit put off by the dealer, Scotthall Hampshire, who completely ignored me and were totally unhelpful. After that we went to the Land Rover dealer, who were so much more helpful, really good.

For now though I’m going to stick to Forza, hopefully soon i will have enough credits for an NSX or Porsche 997, then i can really start racing.
